Bungie contractor reveals how the studio apartment downgraded his Destiny credit then 'shadowbanned' him from future work
IGN published an in-depth investigation on December 10 into Bungie's alleged work culture of harassment. A finicky focalize of the report was the conditions the narrative team worked under, including the "boys club civilization" and continual periods of crunch: And now, a popular Destiny content creator World Health Organization has also expended time as a Bungie contractor has added his tale to the pile.
Myelin Games is considered such an authority on Destiny lore that when Bungie definite it wanted to make just about books based around the game's Grimoire cards, it sought him come out to do a major portion of the work.
Bungie initially contracted Myelin to do one Grimoire book. The cards tell Destiny's lore in a fragmentary fashion, and his job was to collate and curate the active material in a way that would draw sensation for readers. In the telecasting below, he recounts his experience working with Bungie connected this project, saying that the IGN article had successful him realise his experience arsenic a declarer was not unique.
Myelin references about of the article's claims before weighty his own story: Writers getting rewrites at the last moment, sometimes fair-and-square as lines were almost to be recorded, and existence told to grow up a thicker skin all but it; and that "some of Bungie's honest-to-goodness guard were especially precious" astir the lore.
After spending several months structuring the script and acquiring to final proof—the last degree in front publications run short to the printer—Myelin received an email one week before the book was overdue to extend to press. It told him another individual would be added to the project and springiness the Koran a final pass and make suggestions. This individual was a member of the so-called 'old safety," who sent Myelin the following email at the time.
"In that final pass my goal is solitary to make [the book] the best it hindquarters be. Given the insight and reason I have from cultivating the ideas and tending the soils that birthed these tales, I English hawthorn offer some last second challenges/changes to micturate sure it reaches that goal, if you'll allow ME."
Let's all honorable hesitate for a moment to look up to that "inclined the soils" line. Well, the writer of this email surely went on to tend Medull's soil. "[IT was] the old guard devising clear that they had more knowledge and experience of Destiny," Myelin said.
The emailer went happening to motion Myelin's work in a fundamental style: wherefore He'd Chosen this particular structure, why the chapters were ordered this way, then on. Myelin goes on to give examples of how he responded and, at this stop, it seems merely annoying sort o than awful.
"Patc IT was disconcerting to have someone question all the work I'd done a week before deadline, I was annoyed but I understood," Myelin same. "Alas, it didn't stop there: The Scripture was finished, cooked, sent as a PDF to everyone saying 'its ready to go to print.' I checked it and detected my title in the credits had been changed.
"No one spoke to me about it. No one told me it was going to exist changed. [My recognition] was primitively lore curator, because that's what I did; I curated the lore. Making things worse, the person that was added to the team, the "old guard" that had been close to, was given that entitle, and I was bestowed a different statute title, lore consultation, which I matt-up didn't reflect my role."
Myelin wrote the following email to the senior leading involved with the Holy Scripture:
"Hi, all. I am not too sure how to bring this up, and I live this is a sensible topic, but I would the likes of to talk of how I am credited in the Holy Scripture [...]. I feel like 'lore consultation' implies that I did not do much work for the volume [...]. I find like I was more active in this project, existence neck-deep since it was freshman presented as an idea. I worked real hard on collating, curating, and deciding on which of the Grimoire cards should be enclosed and what would give lore nerds and non-traditional knowledge nerds the best experience.
"Hope this doesn't complete silly, I am healed-aware that I am new to Bungie and I am merely contracting, however, I silent feel 'Consultation' doesn't accurately represent the work I did for the project. I am non sure what the best title would be, but would like to hear your thoughts."
After the e-mail Myelin union a phone meeting with his head on the project, and he began explaining his position and how a lot bring he'd cooked on the book.
"Literally mid-condemnation while I was describing my persona and my concerns, the extend cut me away, mid-sentence, and I'll have to paraphrase this because IT's a phone call and not an email, but when they cut me off middle-sentence, when I was saying how I felt, they same something like this: 'I'm gonna stop you thither. We don't say "I." This is a team project.'
"Obviously I was talking about what I did, I was expression "I" [...] they then went on this rant about information technology not organism nigh an individual but sooner the team. I was made to feel like I know nothing about the game industry, which I Don River't, but also I was made to feel incredibly selfish for bringing prepared the conversation, for bringing up this talk about how I was credited in the books, like I did something dramatically wrong. I was really mad. I vividly remember precisely where I was when I had this phone outcry [...] I felt the likes of fucking throwing my phone across the road when this person cut me off and gave me this bullshit, generic, corporate, 'there's zero "I" in team.' IT was—just think the near cookie cutter squad talk you could ever imagine and then imagine fucking doing that to someone when they've been working connected a project for months and they're just saying how they feel."
It does seem like information technology would be rather galling to generate that exact 'team talk' in the context of your credit being downgraded on a project you'd spent months happening. As Myelin notes: "I really don't fucking know how you talk of an issue like credits in a book if you don't use the Holy Scripture 'I.'"
Myelin says he was so angry that he just stopped talking. The telephone call improved when the Bungie lead realised they'd perhaps lost too far. They tried to backtrack and eventually, they and Myelin came to an agreement on a new title for the credit in the record book.
"I got a really small glimpse into how this person usually operates," Myelin same. "To be very manipulative and to make me feel like an idiot—I feel like that was their true nature, like they by nature slipped into that answer so easily, like it had been rehearsed and said many times before. Turns out it probably was."
The Grimoire project would turn from a one-book musical theme into ternion volumes, which as these things go was very successful, sufficiency indeed that Bungie distinct to do a quartern (Myelin had initially sketched-out a plan for a serial publication of six books). But Bungie decided that on this occasion information technology would not involve Myelin—which he only found out about when the studio apartment announced the former books.
"The first thing that I persuasion was I got kicked off the team up because I wasn't a team player," Medull said. "I got kicked off the team because I complained. I should've just kept my mouth shut, and mayhap I would've been given the chance to work on Thomas More volumes. I felt like I'd ruined my kinship with Bungie, that I had blind drunk away the leadership team up or this one person, and that I would live shadowbanned from practical with them in future tense."
Some might look at something like this and say what's the fuss over a Word of God credit or a misjudged call, merely the wider context of use is a contractor getting punished and then frozen-out when they stand up for themselves. The remainder between being attributable as a traditional knowledge conservator or lore consultationist May seem minor, but it wouldn't if you'd spent multiple months curating the lore. And everyone should hold up the principle that credit should go where credit is due.
"It makes me incredibly depressing, and really fucking angry," Myelin same. "Because I know I only got a diminutive snippet of what the narrative team had to put leading with. I'm non too trusty where to go from here. I'm hoping to provide this information to Bungie. I'm hoping that they will take it seriously. I'm hoping they testament take action to ensure it doesn't happen once again."
The allegations about Bungie's workplace culture do come with caveats: Many of those who rung in the original IGN cover as wel had good memories of the studio, and the CEO has acknowledged the problems, apologised, explained what they're doing, and secure more actions to come. IT doesn't sound look-alike Bungie is an irredeemable put away, from the outdoor: More that it has historical problems and a domineering 'archaic guard' that need a waken-up call most how they address others.
